Mary Ann Fletcher
Birth Registered: 2nd Quarter 1851 (GRO Ref: Cirencester/Volume 11/Page247)
Baptised: Siddington Parish 15th July 1851
Father’s Name: Thomas Fletcher
Mother’s Name: Ann Fletcher (Nee Deighton)
Father’s Occupation: Labourer

In the 1871 census Mary Ann is recorded as aged 19 and working as a Servant in an address in New Road Cirencester where the head of the household is 42 year old Susannah Williams originally from Wales. Also at the address is a 59 year old Boarder Harriett C Millard
Mary Ann married on the 29th October 1871 in Cirencester Parish Church to Charles Hicks, a Labourer, of Watermoor (Mary Ann’s Occupation is given as ‘Servant’ on the Parish Banns)
The 1881 census tells us that Mary and Charles have set up home at 17 Stepstairs Lane and they have two sons:- Henry Charles aged 9 and Walter George age 1. Charles is aged 33 at the time of the census and is a Labourer at the Gas Works; Mary is 31 years old.
By 1891 the Hicks family has grown. The census of that year shows they are living at 32 Dyer Street and that Charles now age 42 is still working at the Gas Works as a Labourer. Mary is aged 40 and there are five children living at home:- Henry is now 18 and an Agricultural Labourer; Walter G is 10 and at school as are Edith R age 7 and Ernest W age 5. The baby of the family is Albert E age 3.
In 1901 we find that Charles and Mary have moved to 5 Cerney Wick with Charles now a General Labourer shown as aged 57. Mary is shown as aged 48 but is either 49 or 50 depending on the timing of the census. Albert E is aged 14 and is a Plough Boy. During the preceding decade Charles and Mary had two more children Francis W J is shown as aged 10 and a scholar and Lily F who is aged 6 at the time of the census. There is no mention of Ernest W in this entry.
The 1911 census tells us that Charles and Mary have moved again, this time to Latton where Charles now aged 68 is a Bricklayers Labourer. Mary is shown as aged 59 and there are still two members of the family living at home: – Albert Edward aged 23 and Francis Wilfred is shown as aged 15 both boys are shown as being employed as “Cowman on Farm”. An interesting fact on this census tells us Charles and Mary have had seven children but only six living.
The 1921 census tells us that Charles and Mary are living in Poulton Fairford. Charles is 78 and retired. Mary is 70 and is recorded as undertaking “home duties”.
Charles Hicks died in Cirencester in the 4th Quarter of 1923 (GRO Ref: Cirencester/ Volume 6a/ Page 461)

Ten years later in 1881 Ruth is recorded as a visitor to a premises in Raydon Street, Kentish Town in St. Pancras, London where she is listed as a Dressmaker. The other person listed at this address is Jane Bloomfield a 41 year old widow who was a Laundress.
On the 25th May 1885 27 year old Ruth married 29 year old Charles John Baker (B: 1856) in Cirencester Parish Church. No occupation is given for Ruth at the time of the marriage and her address is given as Cricklade Street. Charles is recorded as a Coachman from Stroud. Ruth and Charles now recorded as 50 and 54 respectively, are still living at 2 Ashcroft Road in 1911. Charles is still employed as a Groom and the census indicates this is working for a Builder. Also at this address is a Boarder, 20 year old Butcher’s Assistant James William Birt.
In 1921
Charles John Baker died in Cirencester on the 28th July 1930.
Ruth Matilda Baker died aged 75 in Cirencester on the 1st June 1934 (GRO Ref: Cirencester/ Volume 6a/ Page 439) and was buried on the 5th June 1934. Probate records indicate that her son Charles Henry Baker was a Licensed Victualler at the time of her death.
James Frederick Fletcher /Frederick James Fletcher
Birth Registered: As James Frederick in 1st Quarter 1861 (GRO Ref Cirencester/ Volume 6a /Page 313)
Baptised: As Fredrick James Fletcher on 19th May 1861
Father’s Name: Henry Fletcher
Mother’s Name: Anna (Hannah) Fletcher (nee Hawker)
Father’s Occupation: Fitter
Residence: Cricklade Street
Sponsors: Stephen Brooks; George Gearing; Emily Brooks
In the 1871 census James Frederick is recorded as Frederick and all the records thereafter seems to follow that change. In this census he is aged 10 years old and living in Cricklade Street with his parents Henry and Hannah. Henry is aged 38 and recorded as an Iron Fitter; Hannah is aged 36. Also at home with Frederick are siblings: – Hannah (14); Matilda (12); Harry (7); Ernest 5 and Gilbert aged 3.
The 1881 census indicates Frederick is 21 years old and was working in St Pancras London as a Florists Propagator and is living at 29 Raydon Street with George and Ellen Browning who were 36 and 35 respectively.
When Frederick was aged 25 he married Matilda Wicks aged 27 of Dyer Street in Cirencester Parish Church on the 27th July 1885. Fred is recorded as being a Bachelor; a Gardener and living at 32 Cricklade Street.
The Electoral Roll of 1889 shows Frederick James living at 36 Chester Street Cirencester and is eligible to vote in both County and General Elections.
In 1891 Frederick is a Foreman Nurseryman in Bray Berkshire. This census tells us that Matilda was originally from Oaksey. Frederick is 30 years old and Matilda is aged 33. Living with them at Grenfell Place are their three children: – Frederick C (4); Gertrude M (3) and Elsie who is one year old. Frederick Charles and Gertrude Matilda were both born in Cirencester; Elsie was born in Bray.
Frederick and Matilda went on to have three more children whilst living in Bray: – Mildred in in 1892; Emily in 1894; Ada in 1896.
By 1901 the family have moved to Teignmouth in Devon although Frederick is not listed at the family home at 7 Higher Brimley Terrace. The census lists Matilda aged 42 and their children:- Frederick C aged 14 and a CC Clerk; Gertrude (13); Elsie (11); Mildred (9) ;Emily (7) ; Ada (5) ; and Henry G aged 1 year old who was born in Teignmouth.
We know that by 1902 Frederick and Matilda were living in Guernsey as their youngest son Arthur Edward Frank was born on the 4th October 1902 in Rohais St Peter Port Guernsey and Frederick’s occupation on Arthur’s birth record is listed as ‘Estate Agent’ (This may refer to a Land Management role)
In 1911 Matilda (but not Frederick) now aged 53 is living in 530 Accrington Road Burnley with six of her children: – Gertrude (22) and Emily (17) are both Dressmakers; Ada (15); George (11); and Arthur now aged 8. Frederick Charles is noted on the census as being aged 24 and a Printing Clerk. Elsie aged 21 was not at home at the time of the census but staying with her Aunt Kezia Clarke (Nee Fletcher) in Minety Wiltshire.
The records do not help regarding the where all of the family were between 1911 and 1921 but we do know that Ada married Henry Corkill in Liverpool in 1917.
We know too that the youngest of the family, Arthur E F Fletcher, enlisted in the Royal Tank Corps in 1919; later married Melksham born Gertrude Selfe (1903 – 1986) in 1928 in London and died in Wiltshire in 1981.
Frederick James was a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and paid 2 Guineas a year for his Membership. It is not clear exactly how long he was a Fellow of the RHS but in Newspaper advertisements for his work in 1895 and 1897 we know he was referred to as FRHS.
These advertisements also tell us more about how he went about his profession. The Maidenhead Advertiser are selling articles of his in a collected version in 1895 and the Reading Mercury in 1897 carries an advertisement for his work. It seems at this stage of his career he was undertaking projects and/or consultancy in Horticultural Management and this probably explains why he and his family moved around the country.
The RHS membership records we have been able to get gives us a variety of addresses for Frederick in the period from 1912 to 1919:
1912: 79 Palace Court Bayswater Westminster
1913: No address recorded
1915: 1 Johnstone Street Bath
1919: 69 Foxhall Road Ipswich
At the time of the 1901 and 1911 census Frederick and Matilda were at different addresses but in 1921 they were both living at 69 Foxhall Road Ipswich (the same address as recorded in the RHS records). Frederick is recorded as being aged 60 years old and his occupation is given as Nurseryman. Matilda’s age is given as 63 and is listed as undertaking “Home Duties”. Also living with them were two of their sons Charles aged 35, who is also listed as a Nurseryman, and George aged 20 who is as “assisting his father in nursery work”. Frederick and Charles are shown to be “Employers” and George as Employed at F J Fletcher Nursery in Sidegate Lane Ipswich. Clearly a Family Business.
Frederick published his work called: “Market Nursery Work” … in six volumes; these are still available today in a different format and were published originally by Benn Brothers of London in a number of countries between 1921 and 1924.
The Volumes are:
Volume 1 Cultivation of Crops for Market: Glasshouses and the Propagation of Plants
Volume 2 Cultivation of Crops for Market: Special Glasshouse Crops
Volume 3 Cultivation of Crops for Market: Roses for Market
Volume 4 Cultivation of Crops for Market: Carnations and Pinks
Volume 5 Cultivation of Crops for Market: Orchard Fruit Culture
Volume 6: Cultivation of Crops for Market; Decorative Plants, Trees and Shrubs

In a Preface to Volume 1 we learn that Frederick was a “Nursery Boy” in 1871 and that was where his 50 plus year Horticultural journey began.

The 1901 census records Mary as Mary Ann Lewis. (This look like an annotation error as the older children’s names on the census matches with 1891.) Charlie is not on this entry. Mary is recorded as head of the household living at 56 Watermoor Road and is a Laundress. Joseph is 15 and Florence is 12. Mary Ann is living with her son William T Luce and his wife Edith in 1939 at 35 Sperringate according to the wartime register. Her date of birth is given as 31st March 1851 which is very unlikely given previous records.
Mary Ann Luce (Nee Fletcher) Died in Cirencester in 1945 Q2 (GRO Ref Cirencester/ Volume 6a/ Page 493) Mary’s burial in Chesterton Cemetery was on 2nd July 1945.

Ernest died in Cirencester in 1946 (GRO Ref: Cirencester/ Vol 7b/ Page 295) and was buried in Chesterton Cemetery on the 14th September 1946.
NOTE: Ernest Fletcher is given as the father of twins born in 1895 To May Fletcher (nee Cashmore) . There seems to be no record of a marriage between Ernest and May Cashmore and records show that one twin (Wilfred Gilbert) died as an infant whilst the other twin Violet May Fletcher was raised by her Grandparents Henry and Hannah. No further records of May Fletcher/ Cashmore have been found.

The first census after Gilbert was born in 1871 shows he is aged 3 and living in Cricklade Street with his parents Henry aged 38 (Occupation: Iron Fitter) and Hannah aged 36. Also at that address were six siblings: – Hannah (14); Matilda (12); Frederick (10); Harry (7); Ernest (5) and baby Agnes aged 1.
The 1881 census identifies the family living at number 32 Cricklade Street. Gilbert’s dad Harry is now 46 and described as a Grate Fitter. Hannah (entered incorrectly on the census as “Anna”) is aged 44 and we learn on this census that she is originally from Coates. Gilbert is aged 12 and is at school. His siblings at 32 Cricklade Street are: Harry aged 17 and a Grocer’s Porter; Ernest (15) and an Errand Boy; Fanny (8); Ellen (6); and Kezia aged 4.
In 1891 Gilbert now aged 22 can be found working as a Boot Servant at The Penarth Hotel in Penarth
Gilbert married 27 year old Sarah Morgan in Cardiff in Quarter 2 1892 (GRO Ref: Cardiff/ Volume 11a / Page 580)
During their time in South Wales Gilbert and Sarah have three children.
When we get to the 1901 census we get to know that Gilbert, Sarah and their three sons are living in Charlotte Street Devonport. Gilbert is shown as now aged 32 and a Journeyman Baker. Sarah is 36 and the census record tells us she was born in Llanyre, Radnorshire. Their three sons are: – Gilbert T aged 7 who was born in Cardiff; Percy H J (aged 5) and Fred R M (aged 3) who were both born in Barry.
In the 1911 census Gilbert and Sarah were living in Saltash Cornwall at 2 Victoria Villas. Gilbert is now 42 and a Superintendent for the Britannic Assurance Company. Sarah is 46 years old and two of the boys have started out on their careers. Gilbert Thomas is 17 and is an Accounts Clerk whilst Percy Henry John is aged 15 and is an Apprentice Plumber. Frederick Robert Middleton is aged 13 and still at school.
The Royal Air Force records indicate that Gilbert enlisted for the RAF on 30th July 1918 at age 50 – service number 279174. His date of birth is given as 23rd June 1868 and place of birth as Cirencester. His occupation at date of enlistment was Insurance Agent.
In 1921 Gilbert and Sarah are working and living in Leamington Spa as Butler and Cook respectively. The census of that year gives their ages with Gilbert listed as 52 and 11 and three quarter months (which has to be questionable) and Sarah as aged 54 (which also doesn’t exactly tally with previous information). Gilbert’s birthplace is Cirencester and Sarah’s as Llanyre near Llandidrod Wells. The address they are recorded at is 85 Radford Road.
The 1939 register finds Gilbert and Sarah living in Kent and working for a single “Gentleman” with no occupation at The White House in The Common in Chislehurst and Sidcup. Gilbert and Sarah are Butler and Housekeeper respectively and Edith Fletcher born in 1922 is a Parlourmaid. The residence also includes a 53 year old Nurse Alice Johnson. The register confirms Gilbert’s and Sarah’s exact dates of birth as 23rd June 1868 and 29th February 1864 respectively.
No death registration for Gilbert found on line but a Probate Record indicates that Gilbert died on the 5th May 1943. His address at the date of death was 62 Admiralty Road Rosyth Fifeshire. The fact that the beneficiary of probate was Gilbert’s youngest son Frederick Robert Middleton confirms the veracity of this record.

Robert is shown as one year old and living with his parents in Cricklade Street on the 1871 census (in fact he must have been two) and was the youngest of Robert and Margaret’s children at that time. His older siblings are shown as Henry (20); George (12); Joseph (9); Mary A (6)
In 1881 he was 12 years old and at home at 124 Cricklade Street with his parents and two older siblings, Joseph (19) and Mary (16) plus two younger sisters Georgina (5) and Alice (3).
After serving in the local 4th Militia Battalion of the Gloucestershire (equivalent to the TA) Robert enlisted fully in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment 22nd April 1887 – service Number 2134- for sixteen years (7 in full service followed by nine years – 5+4 – in the reserve)
Most of his service and subsequent reserve service was spent in Dublin where he met and married Alice Colgan (born 1874) in Dublin in 1895, and where his first daughter Margaret was born in 1898.
At the end of his regular service Robert became a reserve soldier and took up employment in Dublin where he was a Tram Driver.
In 1900 Robert was called up to serve in South Africa with the Glosters and was awarded two medals with bars for his service there. According to his family Robert spent some time in the army as Batman to General Roberts. The full story is that Robert was selected by General Roberts in a parade of soldiers at the Curragh particularly because of his stature … at 5ft 9ins he was above average height for that time (and General Roberts was not tall!)
The 1901 census shows that Robert’s wife Alice and daughter Margaret (recorded, and always known as, Maggie) were visitors to 81 Radcliff Street, Bristol.
Soon after his return from South Africa Robert’s service in the army came to an end and he was posted back to Bristol for demobilisation and where he became employed as a Carter.
Robert and Alice had a second child James who was born at Victoria Buildings St Georges Road, Bristol on the 4th November 1904.
Sadly Alice contracted TB in 1904 and died on the 3rd April 1906 at Dowry House Dowry Square from the consequences of TB and other diseases. Her death was registered by her sister Mary Ellen Smith of 10 Victoria Buildings St Georges Road Bristol on the 5th April 1906.
Following Alice’s death Robert returned to Cirencester and the 1911 census shows he was living with his son James at 57 Watermoor Road. His daughter Margaret now aged 12 was staying in Portsmouth with her cousin Florence Adora Hicks (Daughter of Mary Ann Luce Nee Fletcher)
On the 21st December 1912 Robert married Alice Mary Gardner (Born 1883) in Cirencester Parish Church. Alice had lived a few doors away from Robert in Watermoor Road and she had a son Frederick who was born in 1911. The Marriage certificate shows widower Robert was now living at 31 Midland Road and his occupation is given as Labourer. Witnesses at the wedding were Henry George Harris and Florence Maud Hawker (Alice’s sister).
Robert and Alice had five children between 1913 and 1923 of which four survived to adulthood (Arthur 1913; Mary 1915; 1917 and Norman 1923) and one daughter Evelyn who died at five months old in 1918.
On the 5th September 1914 (aged 45) Robert enlisted for short service with the Gloucestershire Regiment probably in response to Field Marshall Kitchener’s appeal for volunteers. His service however didn’t last long …as he was discharged (aged 46) on the 25th January 1915 as” not being likely to become an efficient serving soldier”…in others words “too old”
The 1919 Electoral Roll shows them living at 13 Midland Road*. (31 Midland Road and 13 Midland Road were the same premises with street numbers changing sometime between 1913 and 1916)
The June 1921 census records all of Robert’s family except his eldest son James (aka Jim) living at 13 Midland Road with him and Alice. Robert is recorded as being aged 52 and a Foundry Labourer at Jakes Foundry Watermoor. As well as Robert and Alice (age given as 39 ) others included in the census were Robert’s eldest daughter Margaret (aka Maggie) aged 23 who was working as a Cook and undertaking Laundry work; Alice’s eldest son Frederick Gardner who is recorded on the census as Fred Fletcher aged 10; Arthur aged 8; Mary aged 5 and Elsie aged 4.
The 1928 Electoral Roll shows them still living at 13 Midland Road
The 1939 Register shows Robert and Alice living at 24 Midland Road. Robert’s occupation is given as General Labourer Iron Foundry. There were four other names on the register for that address- one is redacted and this is probably their youngest son Norman then aged 16; the other names on the register at this address were; Vera Clark (11); Rose Gardner (23); Lilian Dixon(60). (Lilian was the mother-in- law of Robert’s son James)
Robert died in Cirencester on the 15th February 1954 at 24 Midland Road from Myocardial Degeneration. His death was registered by his son Arthur on the day he died.
